Claire's gift
This summer, Claire worked on the research vessel, R/V Neil Armstrong.

In August, she sailed out of Reykjavik, Iceland into the Irminger Sea, the water between Iceland and Greenland. They actually sailed in Greenland waters to pick up a replacement part for critical equipment. Eventually, they sailed home to Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

Their mission was to take measurements of various factors of the sea depths and some atmospheric reading as well. I have included a link to the blog of that trip, if you want to explore the details further. I will do that myself.

This posting is to illustrate one of the two souvenirs that Claire brought back for us. She gave both Mary Lea and myself very cool tee shirts of the R/V Neil Armstrong.
I especially wanted to show you the second souvenir that she brought back.
That's right. She brought back a trashed styrofoam cup with some cute doodles on it. I looks like it was pulled out of the ocean - maybe just some debris that Claire then drew on.
That's exactly right except for a few minor issues. Claire did the doodles on a pristine styrofoam cup before it ever got wet. And while it was pulled from the ocean, it had taken a journey down to 2,600 meters before it was hauled back on board by a crane that retrieved the cup and the cup holder.
BTW here is a picture of the cup holder.
At 2,600 meters, the pressure is 260 atmospheres (nearly 2 tons per square inch) and air in the styrofoam is squeezed out leaving only the uncompressable . So the cup got trashed.
I greatly value this souvenir and want to keep it and display it. Here is what it looks like now.

Yep, a styrofoam cup.

The cups were place in the white net bag.

To keep it clean and prevent a breeze from relocating it.
Here are some close ups of Claire's drawings.
Notice the message "I went to the bottom of the Irminger Sea" on the rim.
Contains the R/V Neil Armstrong, the glider (see below), copepods, and perhaps a fulmar flying above the ship.
Here is the glider on deck.
Top bouy of mooring
Whale, copepod, glider and equipment (?)

I'm sure I've got some of the details wrong about what Claire drew on the cup but I'll correct when I find out what.

Hi Gene, very cool! I am glad you like the souvenir and we love ours.
